A Really Handsome, Totally Cool, Charming, and Bearded Trainer Adopted Yoga To His Routine….Just Sayin’
“Yoga has given me a space to shut the world off for an hour at a time.”
I started practicing yoga on a regular basis in February of 2013. Almost immediately I noticed a difference in my recovery from the high intensity, strenuous workouts we run through on a daily basis at FITC. I have dealt with tight hamstrings, knee issues and lower back pain for many years. Since starting yoga, my tightness, aches and pains have improved substantially and made me more mindful of when I need to scale back my workouts. It has taught me how to listen to what my body is telling me.
Beside the marked improvement in my flexibility and recovery, yoga has given me another secret weapon to complete any workout I am faced with. It has taught me how to regulate and be mindful of my breathing. This has been the one aspect of yoga that has given me the biggest advantage at FITC. One of my favorite yoga teachers tells us in class that you can CHOOSE to work hard or work easy. For me, this has a lot to do with staying calm and focusing on my breathe in challenging postures. I am learning to carry this focus off the mat as well. Over the past several months I have faced several tough situations, as we all do throughout life. Yoga has taught me to return to my breathing first, and approach these situations with a clear head.
“It has reminded me that there is a time for work, a time for self-improvement, and a time to devote to personal life.”
Thirdly, yoga has given me a space to shut the world off for an hour at a time. This has surely been easier said than done. Since becoming a small business owner, my to-do list has grown exponentially. Often there is so much to do, that the logical option is to shove it all to the side and do nothing at all. I find that if I take the time to move through my yoga practice with intention and ignore the brain chatter, I tend to move through my day much more efficiently. Yoga has taught me how to bring intention and focus to my professional life. It has reminded me that there is a time for work, a time for self-improvement, and a time to devote to personal life. I am learning that if you can bring focus to all of these aspects individually and create clear borders between them, you will find more fulfillment in each.
Yoga has added a great deal to my life. Physically, professionally, and personally, it has offered me so much growth and value in such a short time period. I am excited to see what my practice will provide for me in the future. I’m proud to say that I am a yogi for life!
